Counter-Strike has been around in beta form for nearly two years, so anyone who's picked up the recently released retail package is bound to face some truly experienced players. Counter-Strike brings a certain level of realism into the arena of multiplayer first-person shooters, stresses the importance of team unity and punishes anyone who tries to hog all the glory. But unlike Quake III: Arena or Unreal Tournament, it's not a mindless action game that involves nothing more than twitch-shooting. Counter-Strike has undergone many facelifts in its two-year existence, and with more than 4,000 servers hosting the game at any given moment, it has burgeoned into one of the most addictive games you'll find online.Ĭounter-Strike is a game of kill or be killed. It's Counter-Strike, the Half-Life add-on that was created by two enthusiasts and a handful of amateur level designers. The reason I mention all of this is because Half-Life itself is set in 200X, conveniently leaving no timeline contradiction even if 200X is 2000.It's a little ironic that one of the most frequently played online games these days isn't a game at all. All of which have rather clear real world inspirations. There ARE Arab terrorists in the game (so it's not like the devs were afraid of depicting them), but their inspirations are clearly groups active in the 1980s and 1990s: the Elite Crew and Guerrilla Warfare in this game are both said to be supported primarily by Libya and are responsible for, among other acts, "a 1982 bombing of an American rock and roll band", "the 1989 hijacking of Fly Friendly Airlines Flight 983", and an attack on a Mediterranean luxury cruise ship. There is comparatively little focus on the Sunni Arab terrorists that would have been the primary target of any counter-terrorist effort when the game came out. One mission has you fighting the IRA, which disarmed in 1998 another has you fighting a militia group said to be inspired by the Waco siege of 1993 yet another mission has you as Japanese law enforcement pursuing a cult equipped with poisonous gas, a rather obvious reference to the 1995 Tokyo subway attack. The terrorists in CZ/DS all stepped straight out of the 90s.
HALFLIFE COUNTER STRIKE MOD
Team Fortress Classic, another multiplayer mod derived from Half-Life which was sold bundled with it and marked with the lambda logo on its box art, was going to be explicitly set in the Half-Life universe via an expansion pack at one point development was scrapped 60% of the way through. The first Counter-Strike game was actually titled "Half-Life: Counter-Strike" when sold at retail (it even had the lambda logo).Ĭounter-Strike: Source was bundled with every retail copy of Half-Life 2, and basically marketed as the game's multiplayer component, tying the two at the hip. Now, pair all of the above with a few incidental facts: The shipping containers in cs_assault sport Black Mesa logos. Feel the most throbbing action with one of the greatest action titles launched for PC. Defeat your rivals in the Counter Strike battle.
HALFLIFE COUNTER STRIKE FULL
Download Counter Strike right now for free, a shooter full of action. Again, it would be very easy to simply brush that texture off (and they did slightly modify the model in another way), so this can't be dismissed as simply them being lazy. 8/10 (3075 votes) - Download Counter Strike Free. The "Thin Ice" mission in Deleted Scenes has the building being guarded by several fictional ceiling-mounted turrets identical to the ones found in Black Mesa.Īnother Deleted Scenes mission, "Lost Cause", has you encounter the exact same (fictional) M23B tripwire mines that the HECU uses. Notably, the same SUV without the logo appears in cs_siege, so it wasn't like they just got lazy. The SUVs in cs_militia and de_piranesi have Black mesa logos on them. The projector in the meeting room of cs_office displays a Black Mesa logo on the screen.īlack Mesa scientist models are still used for some of the hostages (at least in 1.6, I can't remember if in CZ/DS). I know the "Valve Universe" theory has been run into the ground at this point, but I really do think that there's an objective connection here: As far as I can tell, there are several signs that these games (at least pre-CSGO, haven't played that) are set in the same universe as Half-Life and Portal, and no real contradictions. Some of these were around in CS 1.6 as well, but I take them more seriously here because CS 1.6 was still somewhat in mod territory while Condition Zero was a full, updated, 2004 standalone release with a single player campaign and some semblance of a story. Having played Counter-Strike: Condition Zero and Deleted Scenes a while back (I got them for like $1), I couldn't help but notice the large amount of references to Half-Life in it.
